Description
In the city of Willemstad, there is a historic area of the city, called Scharloo, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list, along with the neighborhoods of Punda, Otrabanda and Pietermaai.
The architecture of the Scharloo area, which is reached by crossing the Wilhelmina drawbridge on the other side of the Waaigat, dates back to the 1700s.
It was the old Jewish quarter.
The Scharloo neighborhood was a kind of suburb of the colonial era where you could find beautiful mansions built by the rich Jewish merchants of Curaçao in the 19th century.
Today the colorful restored houses can still be visited, but they function as offices, businesses and hotels.
