Its mission is to satisfy the needs of the members of the Jewish Community of Uruguay, whether they belong or not to the organization. Its origin dates back to 1916, when 58 immigrant Jews from Eastern Europe founded the Ashkenazi Chevra Kadisha, whose first concern was to purchase land for a Jewish community cemetery. They had their first headquarters in 1923, at 1160 Durazno street. In 1981 the current Kehila building opened its doors with a new thrust towards spreading and revitalizing Jewish culture. The Kehila is organized in the following areas: * Culture Department * Adult Department * Youth Department * Employment center * Disability Department * Network of Voluntees * Rabbinate Department
